SOLSTICE’s textile ecosystem analysis of the area

SOLSTICE partner Circle Economy, in collaboration with Municipality of Prato, conducted a current‐state analysis of the textile ecosystem in Prato, with prevailing circular practices.

Prato stands out as a textile manufacturing hub. It produces 25 kt of fibres and 113 kt of finished goods annually, exporting 66% of both. Prato also imports 49 kt of used textiles, with 60% of its separately collected textiles exported for reuse and 30% recycled. The city employs 46,400 people in textiles, nearly 25% of its population, mainly in fibre and textile production.

Spatial access to circular services varies: central neighbourhoods have the most recycling, repair, and second-hand services. While walking access is limited to central areas (within 15 minutes), most of the province is reachable by car in 10 minutes. There is potential for improving equitable service distribution.

Consumer behaviour in Prato shows significant stigma around second-hand clothing. Price remains the key purchase driver, with sustainability as a secondary concern. Repairing is not widespread due to cost and inconvenience, but community repair cafes could improve engagement.

Given Prato’s strong manufacturing and recycling base, opportunities exist to further develop local reuse and repair services and promote them as valued components of a circular textile system.
