SOLSTICE’s textile ecosystem analysis of the area

SOLSTICE partner Circle Economy, in collaboration with Grenoble-Alpes Métropole , conducted a current‐state analysis of the textile ecosystem in Prato, with prevailing circular practices.

Grenoble’s textile economy is small, importing all its fibres and producing only 0.2 kt annually.
It collects under 22 kg of post-consumer textiles per person, with about 45% exported for recycling or reuse. Grenoble Métropole has 1,320 textile employees, primarily in retail and repair.

Access to circular services varies by transport mode. Walking maps show that reuse and repair services are concentrated in central busy areas, while recycling points are more evenly distributed. Driving reduces these spatial inequalities, allowing most residents to reach services more easily.

Grenoble’s consumers prioritize price but tend to value quality and comfort more, especially among older residents who are more open to long-lasting and sustainable items. Second-hand shopping is accepted but not always convenient or appealing, while repairing is seen as costly and time-consuming. Community-oriented repair events could encourage greater participation.

There is a need to increase the visibility and accessibility of circular services, especially repair, and to develop awareness campaigns that highlight the benefits and appeal of circular fashion.

Discover the textile sector in Grenoble

Despite the area's smaller textile sector, initiatives like second-hand shops, swap places, and repair centres provide essential infrastructure. Grenoble also leverages its status as France's second largest research hub to drive innovation, making it a key player in circularity efforts.
